The hardest part of the Yangshuo brief was learning how to lose, to the mountains outside. ADA FLOOR designed and produced the carpet across 141 suites and villas, opening in 2014 with a palette of rice, grey and ink-green held down by the light off the Li River.
Yielding to the karst
Banyan Tree Yangshuo opened in 2014 on the Li River's Diamond Waterway, 141 suites and villas with karst peaks outside every window. Against that view any show-off pattern on the floor is bad manners. The carpet steps back on purpose: rice, grey and dark green hold the background and hand visual command entirely to the landscape.

Where three colours come from
The palette was not invented from a card but traced through the interior's own materials. Local black wood, bamboo and stone form the rooms' base, and the carpet translates that set downward. Inside and outside speak the same natural colours; the transition shows no joint.

What the feet know
Stepping back is not settling. Guestrooms use natural wool with pile height and density tuned for barefoot walking. In a resort house, slippers come off. The visible half of the brief yields to the mountains; the invisible half is left to the feet. Both lines cost money separately.

Villas walk slower
The villas run larger, so the pattern's rhythm loosens and density drops away, and the pace of walking follows it down. Two speeds inside one resort: tighter in the suites, more open in the villas, pattern concentration tracking spatial scale. Guests cross the distance from rooms to villas before the floor quietly says so.

Damp and ventilation on the Li River
Fuli township sits on the Li River's diamond waterway, where karst humidity stays high all year and the villa clusters depend on natural ventilation. Carpet here is specified as a breathable system: a backing that holds no water, an underlay chosen for damp conditions, and a laying window that avoids prolonged rain. With 141 suites and villas spread across several clusters, transport and on-site storage also have to respect moisture — rolls stored upright, off the floor, opened only as they are fitted.

Where ivory, grey and ink green came from
The three colours were taken from outside the window rather than from a card. Karst peaks read grey in overcast light, pick up green in sun, and return a near-ivory bounce from rice fields. One-to-one samples were carried into a suite of the same orientation and read twice, against the view by day and under lamp at dusk. The wool-to-silk ratio differs by colour: ivory carries more silk, ink green is all wool.

Reviewing a floor people walk barefoot
Guests here walk without shoes, so comfort is judged before appearance. Pile height and twist were set for bare feet, and every edge detail was kept low enough not to catch a toe. In operation the villas wear more slowly than the rooms because they are used less often, but their cleaning window is tighter: deep cleaning moves closer together in the wet season and must leave time to dry. Reviews follow the seasons, watching for odour and lifting after the humid months.
