The brief began with a blown-up limestone quarry. ADA FLOOR designed and produced the carpet across 115 guestrooms and the public areas, opening with the hotel in 2021, the lobby's 3,800 × 2,400 mm feature carpet woven as a single custom piece.

From the Tangshan pit to the guestrooms

When the Garden Expo opened in Jiangning Tangshan in 2021, its abandoned quarry, waterfall curtain and bamboo groves became the interior design's entire raw material. CCD Hong Kong worked them into the circulation of 115 rooms and suites. Resort floors usually drift toward polish; this one went the other way and brought the strata's roughness indoors first.

The 3,800 × 2,400 piece

The lobby feature carpet measures 3,800 × 2,400 mm and is the first thing underfoot. Its pattern comes from the layer-cuts left by quarrying — every slice mark on the rock face translated into bands of depth across the field. A single piece that size means colour and weave had to land right in one go; no seam is available to hide behind.

Wool for the drag, silk for the gleam

The materials split the job: matte wool carries the roughness of rock face, lustrous silk the wet gleam of water marks. Two reflections in one carpet. Under the lobby lights the strata stay dark while the water lines catch fire. The material contrast does the talking; no installation art required.

Bamboo shadows reach the rooms

In the guestroom wing the volume drops. Bamboo shadows dissolve into soft vertical lines that read against the real grove outside, with bird silhouettes scattered between. From lobby to wellness rooms the pattern goes from weight to weightlessness, a walk out of the quarry and back into the hillside, with the floor as its draft.

Damp and quiet beside a quarry water feature

At Tangshan the setting is quarry, waterfall and open water, so indoor humidity runs high and water noise mixes with footfall in the public areas. The floor has two jobs at once: a backing and underlay that stay stable in damp, and enough absorption to calm a lobby of hard surfaces. Carpet with underlay improves slab impact sound by about 24 to 33 decibels under ISO 10140-3 and ASTM E492. Environmental performance follows FloorScore and the GB 18587 limits, with guestroom sound checked against GB 50118.

Making one 3800 by 2400 piece

The lobby's principal carpet measures 3800 by 2400 millimetres and is formed as a single piece rather than assembled from joins. The one-to-one cartoon was spread on the workshop floor and checked against the drawing: wool carries the roughness and matte of a rock face, silk carries the reflection of water, and the two fibres are placed in zones within one piece. Yarn came from a single dye lot, and the finished carpet was read in daylight from three metres and from one to confirm the colour boundaries left no mark.

Years on, is the bamboo shadow still there?

Since opening in 2021 the wear pattern has come from two sole types — luggage wheels and slippers. Maintenance is split by zone: the lobby piece is deep-cleaned and groomed along the pile direction each quarter, guestroom corridors are graded twice a year. Silk is the sensitive component, so the cleaning SOP names the permitted chemistry and dilution. The pattern still reads, which says the fibre ratio and pile height were set in the right range.
