What is Axminster woven carpet?

Key points
Axminster carpet is woven on an Axminster loom, with yarn inserted into the warp-and-weft structure following the pattern program. Dense, flat and abrasion-resistant, it is the mainstream craft for large hotel lobbies, corridors and ballrooms.
- Consistent density and free colour changes come from the loom program; lead times for large areas are far more predictable than handcraft.
- Its wear resistance and pile recovery carry the heaviest footfall in hotel public areas.
- The 984.4 m² of carpet at the Fairmont Peace Hotel Shanghai was woven on a 4-metre Axminster loom: 7 mm pile, 80% fine wool, jute backing, 12 colours.
How the structure is built
An Axminster loom inserts and locks yarn row by row according to the pattern program; pile yarn and backing warp and weft interlock as one, with no glue holding the pile. The back of the carpet shows a clear row-and-colour-block pattern — the most direct way to identify true weaving.

Why hotels choose it
The corridor is the hardest-working space in a hotel: trolleys, scrubbers, thousands of passes a day. Axminster's density and pile recovery survive that load, while flat large-area installation, pattern matching and predictable lead times fit the renovation rhythm of hotel groups — which is why it has been the default for lobby and corridor systems for decades.

Reading the quality of a woven carpet
Check three things: pile-fibre content and yarn count, density, and finishing. The same design at different wool ratios splits apart in price and lifespan; under-density sends the pile flattening into the backing. Ask for pile composition, total weight and density in writing, then verify against a physical sample.

How it relates to handcraft and tufting
The three crafts divide work rather than rank it: original complex artwork and sculpted pile go to hand-tufting and carving; large uniform wear-critical areas go to Axminster; high-volume chain and renovation orders go to machine tufting. One hotel using all three is normal, not inconsistent.
