What is the difference between hand-tufted and woven carpet?

Handcraft splits into knotted and tufted families; loom weaving builds a stable structure by machine. They are not a hierarchy — they divide the work between visual expression and delivery certainty.

Key points
Handcraft splits into knotted and tufted families; loom weaving builds a stable structure by machine. They are not a hierarchy — they divide the work between visual expression and delivery certainty.
- Hand-tufting, carving and sculpting suit complex patterns, custom shapes and layered pile.
- Axminster and Wilton weaving offer consistent density and shorter, more predictable lead times.
- Judge a claimed craft by the carpet back, pile transitions and process detail — always ask for a physical sample.
Two hand families, one machine family
Hand-knotted carpets tie yarn strand by strand around the warp and can take months or years. Hand-tufted carpets punch yarn through the primary cloth with a tufting gun, then add shearing and carving for sculpted depth. Axminster and Wilton weaving inserts yarn mechanically into the carpet structure, giving stable density, regular widths and short lead times.

Durability does not follow the label
A densely knotted carpet can last generations; a hand-tufted carpet lives or dies by yarn resilience, tuft density and its latex-and-backing system. Poorly made 'hand' carpets age faster than a proper woven one — on heavy-traffic corridors, high-density Axminster usually outlasts thin hand pile.

Lead time and price logic
Woven project orders can ship in weeks; hand-tufted work takes weeks to a few months; hand-knotted work is measured in quarters. Woven pricing follows materials and capacity and is transparent; hand pricing follows labour, so identical patterns can vary several-fold between workshops. Compare physical samples, not photographs.

Assign craft by zone
A common high-performing split is hand-tufted in the lobby, woven in the corridors and blended fibre in the guest rooms: original artwork and tactile depth go hand, large uniform areas and wear go machine.
