「Tide Rising from the East」began as a waterscape sculpture by the Yongning River. By the time Sheraton Huangyan opened in 2023 under the brand's global renewal, the tide had been translated into a pattern you can walk on. ADA FLOOR designed and produced the carpet across 283 guestrooms and public areas, opening with the hotel.

The distance from sculpture to pattern

The theme across 283 rooms and the public spaces comes from the Yongning River waterscape sculpture. Landing the concept required a translation first: the water's motion abstracted into geometry, swell kept, literalism dropped. Concept design fears nothing more than floating away. These tide lines were finally filed down to something unhypnotic in a hotel corridor.

A tide that must not tire the eye

The corridors are the pattern's main stage. Blue-grey neutrals vary within repetition. Too static reads dull, too loud reads exhausting; both traps are dodged. Guests walk the same corridor day after day; what the pattern has to survive is a season of glances, not a single one.

Ten seconds in the lift lobby

Lift lobby zones run denser patterns. Nobody lingers there longer than ten seconds, and brand impressions are usually built in tens of seconds. The shortest pause on the route gets the highest pattern concentration: a fair trade written into the circulation design.

Yarn and density pin the tide down

Motion belongs to the pattern; durability belongs to the structure. Yarn and density put the tide back on the side of floor material. Luggage wheels cross the corridor daily and the tide lines stay tide lines. The distance from sculpture to carpet is, in practice, the whole road from render to sample to workshop.

Taming echo along 283 keys

The circulation in this hotel is long, alternating hard floor and carpet between lobby, lift halls and corridors. Carpet with underlay improves slab impact sound by roughly 24 to 33 decibels under ISO 10140-3 and ASTM E492, which gives the guest floors their quiet baseline. Public areas are a separate account: reverberation is designed for 0.4 to 0.6 seconds, and small lift halls are where echo collects, so pile weight and density lean absorbent. Static is assessed under CRI HT-101 and held within 2 kV.

Translating a sculpture into a floor

The pattern starts from a waterside sculpture on the Yongning River and has to be translated: three-dimensional curves reduced to lines, line density carrying the rhythm of ripples, then handed to a loom or a tufting gun. The one-to-one cartoon was spread across the workshop floor and compared against photographs of the sculpture so the curve was not simplified away by the process. At sign-off the sample was stood on edge to read its shadow, because half of a tide pattern lives in relief.

After handover, watch the wayfinding

A corridor pattern also works as signage: density tightens at the lift hall and relaxes along the guest wing, so a guest feels the change without reading a number. In service the failures cluster at transitions and door thresholds, where luggage wheels pass daily — those are checked by push force at handover rather than by appearance. Quarterly visits record whether the pattern registration has drifted.
